Hurricane Milton has killed at least four people and added to the misery caused by Hurricane Helene .
The storm moved south and made landfall late on October 9 as a Category 3 storm on Siesta Key, about 70 miles south of Tampa, Florida. The damage was widespread and water levels could continue to rise for days, but Governor Ron DeSantis warned that this was not a “worst-case scenario.”
The deadly storm dumped up to 18 inches (45 centimeters) of rain in some areas, with the worst damage occurring in Sarasota County, where water levels rose between 8 and 10 feet (2.5 and 3 meters), according to Governor DeSantis.
Local officials reiterated that the danger from the storm has not passed. Storm surge warnings have been issued for much of the east-central coast of Florida and north into Georgia.
Tropical storm warnings have been issued along the coast to South Carolina. Officials in hard-hit Florida counties of Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota and Lee have urged people to stay home, warning of downed power lines, fallen trees, blocked bridges and severe flooding.
The storm caused power outages across a large area of Florida, with more than 3.2 million homes and businesses without power, according to the website poweroutage.us.
The fabric roof of Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team in St. Petersburg, was ripped off by the high winds. It is unclear how much damage was done inside the stadium. First responders had been evacuated from the staging area there before the storm hit.
St. Petersburg residents are without water after a water main burst, forcing the city to shut down service. Mayor Ken Welch warned residents that power outages could last longer and sewers could become clogged.
Before making landfall, Milton spawned tornadoes in southern Florida. One tornado touched down in the sparsely populated Everglades and crossed Interstate 75. Another tornado hit Fort Myers, snapping trees and ripping the canopy off a gas station.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce, Florida, was particularly hard hit, with multiple homes destroyed and at least four people killed by the tornado.
Before the storm hit, about 125 homes had been destroyed, many of them mobile homes in senior living communities, said Kevin Guthrie, director of the Florida Department of Emergency Management.
About 90 minutes after making landfall, Hurricane Milton was downgraded to a Category 2 storm. By the morning of October 9, Hurricane Milton had downgraded to a Category 1 storm on the 5-level storm scale, with maximum sustained winds of about 150 km/h and left the state.
The storm hit a region still reeling two weeks after Hurricane Helene flooded streets and homes in west Florida, killing at least 230 people. In many places along the coast, cities were racing to collect and dispose of debris before Milton’s winds could blow it away and cause more damage.
